Automobile Recalls And How They Affect You

I’m David Salazar. We are the Safety Guardians, and we try to keep you updated on everything that consumers may be worried about because it is probably in their home. We also have a YouTube channel and a Facebook group. We provide a lot more information there, along with some pretty cool memes.

Today’s subject is literally something every family has: automobiles, cars and trucks. The reason why I’m talking about this is because based on statistics, there are about 30 million vehicles that are affected every one to three years by product defects or some kind of design defect.

Takata airbags

Let me give you some examples of those kinds of defects just so you have an idea. I’m sure everybody has heard about the Takata airbag case. These defective airbags affected nearly 30 million vehicles. The problem was that the airbags did not properly deploy.

Normally, whenever people are in severe accidents, these airbags have algorithms attached to them where a computer sends a signal saying, “You must deploy.” But these airbags weren’t deploying. And this was actually causing severe injuries to a lot of people because they purchased these vehicles so that these air bags would deploy at the proper time, but they didn’t.

Ignition defects

Let me give you another example: ignition defects. General Motors is connected with 10 different ignition defects affecting millions of cars in the past 10 years. It’s ridiculous how many ignition defects there are. And the defect itself is ridiculous.

Let’s just say you are driving on the highway. The ignition defect on this is that the ignition will suddenly turn off. Your car could turn off on the highway because of this defect. That is absolutely unacceptable. And companies that are responsible for these defects need to be held accountable if you get injured.

Where to find out about defects

I want to make sure that you stay on top of this stuff. The place to look for all of these defects is called NHTSA, the National Highway and Transportation Safety Association. It’s a great resource for people who want to see what kind of defects affect them daily.

This is going to be an ongoing topic when I talk about car defects. Because there are more than just recalls that we talk about. There are also design defects. There are a lot of other things as well, including failure to properly maintain the car and defective maintenance. And we can even go into tires. Those are subjects that we can talk about at another time.

Check if your car has recalls

Today, I just wanted to address recalls and how they can affect you. If you have not done so, take a look on NHTSA’s website and see what kind of recalls your car has.

I took a look at mine yesterday. I have two separate vehicles and both of them actually have active recalls that I need to go in and get changed out.  One of them actually says the likelihood of an accident is major if I do not get this thing fixed. Please be aware of that.

If you have questions

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know. I’d love to talk to you about this and see if we can help you out or at least point you in the right direction. If you have been injured because of a car defect, call me.

We can go over whether or not your car was in the appropriate serial lot for the defects and then we can go from there. I look forward to talking to you. We are the Safety Guardians and we’ll see you soon.
